It was such a lovely day I thought it a pity to get up.

A Sad Day for the Media
First of all, I cannot help but say that I am so thankful that the Michael Jackson case is over. I’ve never seen so much non-news masquerading as news. Whoever decided that this was front page stuff for the past six months–I simply don’t know. It’s really the story of a very sick man (regardless of the verdict–I’m sure it was correct) and a spongy markey ready for gossip!
As I was reading MSNBC today, I caught the glimpse of the main graphic:

“Michael Jackson won’t let boys into his room now” — Geez, is it just me or has it always seemed like a bad to have kids hanging around in your bedroom. Common sense.
To MJ — get some help! To MSNBC, find a better editor to pick real news stories!
Good Things About Houston
Yes ladies and gentlemen, I am now starting to compose a list of good things in Houston. It’s taken me 9 months and a lot of negative thoughts, but I decided it’s time to focus on the good things!
Item Number 1 : Radio Stations
Houston has (at least) four fairly good radio stations. And if compare them to the Dallas equivalent–well–there really is no comparison.
1) Mix 96.5 (Houston) vs. Mix 102.9 (Dallas)
96.5 Wins Hands down. With a nice mix of both current music and the 90′s with an occassional classic, 96.5 plays a generally (although slightly repetitive) selection of tunes. 102.9, however, is still stuck in 1988, playing music that I don’t remember as a six-year old.
2. 104 KRBE vs. 106.1 KISS-FM
Kiss FM has the ultra-popular Kidd Craddick — but I’ve never been one to fall for the popularity contests. KRBE has better deejays and plays better music. Bam. 104 KRBE is the winner.
3. KSBJ vs KLTY
I loved KLTY growing up. That is, of course, until I discovered secular music (don’t scoff, please). Then I learned the problem of cheesy Christian tunes. That being said, at least KSBJ is true to their mission, not just clamoring about being “safe for the family.” They are truly and unashamedly Christian–even if some of the dj’s saccharine comments leave you wanting more. Victory – KSBJ.
4. I don’t know the letter but it’s Houston – 94.5 vs. Dallas 102.1 KDGE (The Edge).
I usually forget about this station (sadly), switching to cd before I make it down this far on the radio dial…but I think 94.5 is better. It should be, it would fit the pattern, right?
That’s right, Houston wins 4-0 in the battle of radio.
Learning from Microsoft IE
Yesteray I read that Microsoft finally was introducing tabbed browsing for IE. It was by way of the MSN Toolbar, but still it was a momentous moment for Microsoft. Of course, The IE weblog mentioned that IE7 will have tabbed browsing, but that will not be available until the end of the year at the earliest.
Thursday Randoms
What a crazy week…or perhaps better put, “What a long weekend / week.” At any rate, tomorrow is my dad off [grins] so I can sit down and relax for a bit and even write about the past few days of my life.
Saturday | I drove to Dallas (North Richland Hills to be exact–old habits die hard) for my first ever couples wedding shower. Beforehand, I went to the tux place and was measured for the tux for Erin’s wedding this summer. It was a painless endeavor; afterwards, I ate with Erin, Brett and friends followed by the shower. I had a good time, although the whole “shower” thing still gets to me ![]()
Sunday | We were up at 500a and were on the road to Amarillo by 600a. Sidenote: no man was ever intended to get up that early. We arrived for the family lunch, where we had the impromptu family reunion. Next came the viewing [for my granddad's funeral] in Pampa, Texas; and inevitably someone said, “He looks so good…” Which to me is one of the dumbest things ever… “No, he actually looks very very dead…” I don’t say that to demean the process, I just don’t understand the phrase. I digress…
Monday | We head to Miami, Texas for the funeral at the First Baptist Church. The family dinner was at 1100a (tasty barbeque, I might add) followed by the funeral at 100p. We all crowded into the worship center. The funeral was nice (as nice as a funeral could be) — it was a celebration of his life and the legacy he left. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t dry eye in the place as my cousin sang Thank You by Ray Boltz.
I served as a pallbearer, and after placing the casket in the car, we headed to the cemetary for the last part of the funeral. It was a warm and windy day, and everyone said their last goodbyes. Afterwards we were back on the road to Dallas.
Tuesday | I slept in. It was great. Had lunch with Erin at Taco Bueno, hit up Best Buy for the new Coldplay CD. It’s good–go buy it. And I’m back on the road to Houston.
Some truck decided to sideswipe a church van, so that prolonged the trip by thirty minutes. But I made it home safe and sound…
And that was my weekend…
Basketball Week 2
My stats aren’t quite as good this week…but I blame it on the long trip to the panhandle.
6 points on 3/6 shooting
3 rebounds
1 block
1 steal
2 fouls
and lots of sucking air! I’ve started getting in shape (I’ve run twice since then…) There is no game next week, so I’ll post again on the 21st.
Not the Suns Too
Basketball, Night 1
I’ve decided to keep my basketball stats on the blog this year. FYI: I’m playing in the summer basketball league at Champion Forest…
6 points on 3/5 shooting.
8 rebounds
2 steals
3 turnovers
5 fouls
18 minutes (give or take a few minutes)
Yea, I fouled out but I had a good time. We lost the game by five points or so…our team took way too many three pointers. And I think I held Dave Spruell in check fairly well too…
